Anger Management Workshops
As a society, we are an angry people. We think that even minor affronts to us deserve intense anger. If we don’t react to even the slightest rudeness, we are looked at as weak. We believe that standing up for our rights means yelling, cursing, or even violence. Because anger is natural if managed correctly, there are many anger management workshops around the country to help people learn this important skill.
One skill that anger management workshops teach is relaxation techniques to use when we are angry. The old counting to ten cliché is as workable today as it was a hundred years ago. The courting allows us time to relax and cool down before we say something it escalate a situation. By the time we get to ten, we should be more relaxed and much calmer.
Another relaxations technique is so simple. Learning to breathe is one of the best relaxation techniques. At anger management workshops, participants learn the correct way to breathe when faced with an angry situation. Stress makes us breathe in a shallow way. This shallow breathing does not give our bodies enough oxygen. The lack of oxygen puts our body into ‘fight or flight’ mode. This adrenaline rush makes one even angrier. Relaxation is impossible with shallow breathing.
The correct way to breathe in these situations is to breathe deeply from the belly button. Concentrate on your breathing. Breathe in and out as deeply as possible. Keep this breathing technique going until you feel completely calm and refreshed. The reason for the anger might still be evident, but the anger is now more manageable. Your reaction to the stressor is now in control.
Talking about your anger is another technique employed in anger management workshops. Even though talking about their problems is not easy for most people, these workshops are an ideal place to talk. All of the people at the workshop have the same anger problems; therefore, no one is going to judge you. You are all together for the same reason. All of you have problems with anger and the inability to control your anger is ruining your lives. Work up the courage to talk and you feel better. Holding in anger and the subsequent anger has been taking over your life. It’s time to let it go in a safe environment like an anger management workshop.
Because qualified therapists generally organize these workshops, there will be many talks about anger and its consequences. Listen closely and see how these talks fit your life. Take notes of any important information so that you can look at your notes later. There might even be role playing activities. Volunteer if you can work up the courage. The role playing is fun and often very therapeutic.
If you have problems managing your anger, go to an anger management workshop if there is one in your area. This is a great starting place for helping you resolve your anger problems. Anger ruins lives. Don’t let it ruin yours.
