A Guide to Anger Management Medication
There are various ways to treat the problem of chronic rage. While anger is a normal emotion it can become problematic when it is expressed in a dangerous way or has a negative effect on one's everyday life and/or relationships. There are plenty of books, classes and seminars on the subject of anger management. However, some people require more help in the form of medication. Understanding the role of anger management medication and what your options are is crucial before deciding if it is right for you.
The first step is to see a professional to evaluate the problem and why it is occurring. In some cases, cognitive behavior therapy will be sufficient, but in other cases, medication is most beneficial. It is important to understand that there is no particular medicine for anger itself. Problem anger is often a symptom of another issue, such as uncontrolled depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or other mental illness. Diagnosing the underlying problem is crucial before the correct medication can be prescribed.
Antidepressants such as SSRIs and SNRIs are often used to treat disorders like depression and generalized anxiety disorder. They include drugs such as Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, Zoloft, Effexor and Cymbalta. These drugs should be used under the strict supervision of a psychiatrist or doctor and never discontinued abruptly as harmful side effects may occur. Anti-anxiety medicines such as benzodiazepines may also be prescribed to take as needed or occasionally on a regular basis. They include such drugs as Valium, Xanax and Ativan and should also be taken under strict supervision as they can be extremely habit forming. For bipolar disorder, mood stabilizers like Lithium and various antipsychotic drugs may be prescribed. Once again, these drugs are not an 'anger fix' but can help the issue that may hinder the individual from expressing their anger appropriately.
If you have questions about anger management medication, speak to a doctor or psychiatrist. They can help you determine why your anger problems are occurring and whether or not medication may help you. Before taking anything, make sure you understand the side effects, interactions and proper dosing instructions. Even if you experience distressing side effects, never discontinue prescribed medicine without first asking your doctor. Sometimes, side effects will occur at first then subside after your body becomes accustomed to the drug.
