Anger Management for Teens

The teen years are perhaps the most difficult time in our lives. During our teens, we are learning who we are, we are separating from our parents, and we are dealing with feelings that we don’t understand. One minute we feel like an adult and the next moment we long for the easy days of childhood. Obviously, all of these difficult changes often result in many types of emotion. Often the most difficult emotion is anger. Anger is natural but without learning how to manage our anger as teens, we are simply heading for trouble. Therefore, anger management for teens is one of the best lessons they can learn during these turbulent years.

Even though anger is a natural emotion, too much anger can lead to self-destructive behavior, violence, bullying, drugs and alcohol. There are several ways to deduce whether or not your anger is out of control. If you get angry at seemingly inconsequential events and can’t seem to suppress your anger, you probably should learn some anger management techniques. If you are often in trouble at school for shoving, screaming, cursing, or plotting to get back at your enemies, you more than likely have an anger problem. Lastly, if you hold on to your anger about insignificant events in your life and can’t seem to let go, anger has taken hold of you. Learning anger management techniques is a must if you want to lead a normal life.

The teen years are a great time to learn skills that will help you for the rest of your life. Learning anger management skills will certainly help you to live a happy and productive life. Anger management for teens is a little different from the skills the teen learned as a child.

One of the most important steps in learning anger management is to learn the difference between a real reason for anger and a minor annoyance. If someone hurts you or someone you love, anger is certainly acceptable. Striking back is not a viable solution even if the anger is warranted. When the anger is real and warranted, you must take a time out. I know that sounds so first grade. Maybe so, but it still works. Take yourself out of the situation until you cool down. If you act in anger, you will simply be putting yourself on the same level as the person who hurt you. Relax and breathe deeply until you have control of the situation. Then you can think rationally and handle the situation.

Everyone has triggers. Triggers are the buttons people can push to make you angry. Some people know your triggers and will do their best to make sure they get you angry any time they wish. Knowing your triggers will help you to avoid allowing people to run your life. Maybe a brother or sister enjoys taunting you about your lack of skill at sports. The sibling knows that this lack of prowess in spots hurts you and thereby makes you angry. Do yourself a favor and don’t give your brother or sister the satisfaction of making you angry. Now that is the best revenge.

Recognizing anger and learning how to manage that anger is a very important skill that teens must learn to become happy and confident adults. If anger controls you, seek help so that anger won’t take over your life.
