Anger Management Activities for Children
For of all, if your child shows signs of anger, this is normal. Anger is a very human response to a negative stimulus. Problems arise if your child does not understand how to control his anger in different situations. Teaching a child to understand anger and how to control that anger are some of the most important roles of a parent.
First and foremost, your parenting style and the examples you give will teach your child so much about anger whether it be positive or negative. Screaming at your child or constantly blowing up at your spouse will ensure that your child will react to anger in the same way. He will one day be the image of you and you will wonder where the rage comes from. Being a good example has the same effect. If you try your best to keep calm in bad situations and treat your spouse with dignity and respect, your child will learn the same qualities.
If your child already shows signs of not being able to control his anger, there are many anger management activities for children. One great idea if your child is having a tantrum is to quietly stand by so that he is not hurt. After the crying and screaming is over, give him some paper and crayons. Ask him to draw a picture of why he is so mad. Give him time and then talk together about the picture. Be sure to ask him specific reasons for his anger. Then ask him what his tantrum actually accomplished. Be sure to keep your voice very calm and reassuring. Don’t use that blaming voice. Hear him out. Then try to help him realize that his tantrum did not have the effect he wanted. Help him to understand better ways to get his points across. If he thinks you are interested and will listen to him, he will begin to understand that displays of anger accomplish nothing.
Another great anger management activity for children is teaching him to breath correctly. Tell him that when you get angry you drive the ‘bads’ away with your breath. Of course, this activity has to be after the tantrum. Trying to talk sense to a screaming child is like trying to talk to a drunk. He won’t be listening. Anyway, after the tantrum, show him how to breath deeply and relax. This breathing technique will also make you feel better. Tell him to use this technique when he starts to feel angry and the ‘bads’ will go away. Make the activity fun and do it with him.
Children need to feel that they have choices. If your child is old enough, work out a chart with choices and their consequences. Do this chart together so he will understand that he is a part of the process. For instance, the chart could say-‘throws toys’-30 minutes of quiet in the corner. Another example might be ‘yells at mom’-a ½ page apology. Since the child knows the consequences of his actions, he will soon learn to control his anger because he will not want to fulfill the consequences.
Anger in young children can become bullying as a child grows older. Bullying is at an all time high in schools today. Starting early to teach actions and their consequences may very well head off any problems before they start.
